Organisation:West Coast Archaeological Services
Date:April 2008 to May 2009

Description

A further season of trial excavations took place at the site in 2008 to further evaluate the extent and preservation of the remaining archaeological deposits in the cave passages (Trench 17). Excavations at the surface focused on a more extensive area than investigated previously, with Trenches 14, 16, 19 and 20 investigating the extensive burnt mound deposits that arc around the stairwell and cave entrance. To the southwest, Trench 15 was excavated to investigate the deep archaeological deposits within the forecourt area, adjacent to the stairwell entrance. This recorded a large number of superimposed hearth settings and paving which possibly predated the stairwell entrance to the cave. <1>
