Description

A further season of trial excavations took place at the site of High Pasture Cave in 2008, undertaken under the direction of West Coast Archaeological Services. The intention was to further evaluate the extent and preservation of the remaining archaeological deposits in the cave passages (Trench 17), while excavations at the surface focused on a more extensive area than investigated previously, with Trenches 14, 16, 19 and 20 investigating the extensive burnt mound deposits that arc around the stairwell and cave entrance. To the southwest, Trench 15 was excavated to investigate the deep archaeological deposits within the forecourt area, adjacent to the stairwell entrance. This recorded a large number of superimposed hearth settings and paving which possibly predated the stairwell entrance to the cave. <1>
