Silver Brooches found AD 1869 (NAT) OS 1:10,000 map, (1971)

9 silver brooches were found 1869.
Name Book 1873; Info from Mr Hall, farmer, Pitfure.

A number of brooches of which only 3 were accounted for, were found on blasting an earthfast boulder in course of formation of Sutherland Railway through Rogart parish in 1868, and were disposed of by a relative of finder.
The 3 surviving brooches are penannular, 8-9th century Pictish (Fowler H3 type). The 2 larger brooches, both of silver, larger being gilded, were given to a local shopkeeper and were subsequently bought by RBA McLeod of Cadboll who named them the 'Cadboll Brooches'. He exhibited them to Soc of Antiquaries of Scotland on February 14th 1870 and they were purchased for museum 1888 (Acc Nos: FC 1 and 2).
The third brooch, of bronze, silver-gilt, was acquired by Duke of Sutherland; it was exhibited to S A S at same time as others, and is now in museum of Dunrobin Castle (Acc No: X 108). The other brooches of hoard were sold.
In spite of slight discrepancies in date of find and its distance from line of the railway, it seems probable that these were brooches noted in ONB (1873), especially as that authority does not otherwise account for them.

In March 1992, GUARD carried out a metal detector survey of find location for Cadboll brooches. The field was under threat from house construction and it was considered necessary to check the field for any further artefacts. The survey which was carried out using a White's 6000/Di PRO sl metal detector proved negative. It is unlikely that there are further brooches to be found within the field and it may be that find spot was originally misrecorded.

The 2 brooches acquired by the NMS in 1888 are listed in the NMS catalogue under Acc. Nos. FC 1 and FC 2. One was silver with interlaced ornamentation and the second was gold plated with interlaced and birds' head ornamentation. <1>

The brooch in Dunrobin Castle Museum was catalogued during an inventory of thw museum's collection in 2019 by ARCH. Listed under Acc. No. X108. It was on display in case 24, shelf C. <2>
