Access Audit 239 - HAW 11/2003

The structural remains of Beglan township were cleared of commercial forestry during 1998 and 1999. Care was taken by Forest Enterprise to limit damage to visible structures. The footings of at least 5 buildings, one incorporating a substantial corn-drying kiln (at 9660 1145), and 2 enclosures are visible, spread along a north-west/south-east line between two burns, the Allt na Doire to the south and the Allt Coire Breach to the north. A probable whisky still is located south of the township, across the Allt na Doire (NH91SE0011). The remains have been surveyed and researched by Ann Wakeling and Duncan Sanderson of the Badenoch & Strathspey Local History Group.

The township is marked on the Roy Military map (1750) and the Duke of Gordon Estate map of 1766 (12 houses indicated; RHP 2502). There are numerous documentary references to Beglan (see Ann Wakeling's notes in the B&S development sites file; associated documents).

A township, comprising six unroofed buildings, one enclosure and some lengths of field-wall is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1875, sheet lxxiv), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1972).
