Full Description

NC27SE 18 NC 26913 70808.
Large mound. Too large to be a shieling and is thought to be another clearance cairn marking the extent of settlement CWHI 24. This too is overgrown with peat and there are no visible signs of cairn stones. However the mound by its shape is too circular to be natural.
Street 2001, 17.
This mound was located near to the site of CWHI 11 and may possibly be the shieling referred to in the Auk report 2000. However I believe it would be folly to classify this as a shieling. The mound is on the fringes of the grazed area associated with CWHI 24. The feature forms a mound and is more likely to be a clearance cairn (cairns built from stone removed from agricultural sites). The surrounding area appears to be littered with similar features. These mounds occur too frequently and are too circular to be formed naturally. The mound was undated but is more that likely contemporary with the possible settlement CWHI 24.
