Full Description

Following contact from a potential developer, a site visit was made by K Cameron of Highland Council Archaeology Unit in 2007 to the site of a putative broch at Tighchuig, Strathglass. It appeared to be a well-positioned prehistoric roundhouse, commanding extensive views across the strath. The location was more suited to a defensive structure such as a dun or a broch, but the scale of the remains suggested a house. Further features noted at the time that may be contemporary with the house included at least one clearance cairn to the south-east of the roundhouse and a ruinous stone dyke to the north and west. Together, these represented the upstanding remains of a prehistoric settlement and field system. Houses such as this are often found in groups, and although no clear evidence for another such structure was seen on site, there were some areas of rough vegetation and stone around some of the proposed buildings that could be archaeological in origin. The site is located on a series of small plateaus at the lower reaches of the strath slopes, where settlement was feasible and favoured during later prehistory. <1>

The site was visited again and recorded in 2010 during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology prior to proposed development. It was assessed as not under direct threat from the development. <2>

This monument was completely avoided and safeguarded during the site clearance works and subsequent watching brief by Highland Archaeology Services, which included the nearest cabin sites and road line but did not reveal any associated features. <3>
