Full Description

A series of low, grass-covered mounds was noted during a DBA and walkover survey by RoCAS in 2012 on behalf of Forestry Commission Scotland. They were located in a ride under rushes and moss. They stood to 0.25m high in an area measuring 6m north to south by 10m east to west. A small pile of stone 1m in diameter sits within the trees to the northwest. <1>

In August 2015, a walkover survey was undertaken in Braehour, Halkirk by Anne Coombs on behalf of the Forestry Commission Scotland to identify and demarcate archaeological sites in advance of clear fell operations. The sites are numbered according to the RoCAS list and maps.

Site 318: These mounds lie in unplanted ground on a ride and are not particularly visible in long grass as they are very low. The area was taped and marked with gps and photographed. <2>

Note; the 'Pre-felling Walkover Survey' refers to HES Canmore site 7915. This site (see MHG2463) lay 50 metres south east but was 'destroyed by afforestation, visited by OS, 17 March 1982'. The record mentions 'two shielings, accompanied by small mounds' and these may be these mounds. (T.Blackie 26/10/21)
