Full Description

NG74NW 2 7132 4580.
(NG 7132 4580) Standing Stone (NR) (Sculptured)
OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1905)

'Cloch Mhor Mac Cuagan', 'Cloch Ruainidh Mac Caoigen' or 'Cloch Ruainidh mhoir Mhic Caoigean' is a slab with an incised cross on its south face. It stands 9'3" high, 2'10" broad and 2 3/4" thick. Reeves (W Reeves 1862) believed that it was the cross of Mac Oigi, Abbot of Bangor and formerly of Applecross, who died in 801. Local tradition says it formerly stood near the mouth of the river, and marked the grave of an ancient chief, Ruairidh Mor Mac Caoigen. Macrow (B G Macrow 1953) says it was moved about 1800.
T S Muir 1855; W Reeves 1862, W J Watson 1904; B G Macrow 1953.

This stone is as described above. Visited by OS (RD) 28.4.1965.

The churchyard (by extension including the cross slab) and the remains of the C7 monastery were Scheduled in 1969.

The Old Parish Church and burial ground were listed at category B on 25/03/1971.

"Standing stone" marked in graveyard 1st ed OS.
NB there are a series of early carved stones from this site. Reportedly 5 from separate carved crosses, of which 2 were supposed to remain. Photos in file NG74NW0001 show 3 - HAW 10/2002

Following a site visit and assessment by Historic Environment Scotland in 2016-17 as part of the Dual Designations project, it was considered that the early Christian monastery, the cross-slab and the small roofless chapel were of national importance and would remain scheduled and would be excluded from the listed building designation. In addition, all the other memorials and the Old Parish Church were considered to be of special architectural or historic interest and would remain listed at category B. They would also be excluded from the scheduled monument. <1>

The listing and Scheduling were amended on 29/05/2017. <2> <3>

GIS spatial data amended in 2018 according to OS MasterMap. <4>
