EHG375 - Walkover survey - pre-afforestation, Achrasker

Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC (Scotland) Ltd

Date

Nov 1995

Description

A walkover survey was carried out by AOC (Scotland) Ltd in November 1995, in advance of proposed forestry development at Achrasker, Caithness. The survey area was less than 1 sq km, and was centred at NC 993 634. It was sited 3 km south-east of Reay, with access along a track off a minor road. The survey area was traversed at regular intervals. All archaeological features were described in the field and were mapped, using an EDM, on an arbitrary local grid. Conditions for surveying were variable, with some loss of visibility caused by bracken (dead, but still upstanding) in the south-west of the area, and by long rushes and sedge tussocks in the north-west. Some known sites were not re-identified and a small number of additional sites were recorded. <1>
