Date

June-July 2012

Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey was carried out between the 25 June and the 4 July 2012 on behalf of Scottish Water Solutions in advance of new water treatment works infrastructure at Kilmuir and along the proposed line of a new water main between Kilmuir and Kilmaluag, Skye. The work was undertaken to assess the nature and extent of any archaeology likely to be affected within the areas outlined for the proposed treatment works and water main route and in order to inform recommendations for the protection and management of any sites recovered. The survey identified a significant number of new archaeological sites including a prehistoric hut circle, a small prehistoric kerbed cairn, a possible souterrain, farmsteads, shielings, turf and stone dykes, and a track. The desk-based assessment produced a wide range of sites within the immediate landscape surrounding the proposed works including a prehistoric hut circle, souterrain and post-medieval settlement remains. <1>
