Date

Description

Following procurement of Scheduled Monument Consent from Historic Scotland and landowner approval, a programme of vegetation clearance and access maintenance was conducted by the Lochaber Archaeological Society at Torcastle, Scheduled Monument 5471. The work was made possible by the volunteers of the archaeological group and by a Monument Maintenance Grant provided by Historic Scotland. The purpose of the fieldwork was to ensure the long term survival of the monument by removing dense vegetation encroaching the structure and to present a more visible and attractive monument to visitors. The work was conducted under the guidance of AOC Archaeology. As part of the fieldwork, topographic and measured site surveys, including laser scanning surveys were conducted by AOC Archaeology with the assistance of the Lochaber Archaeological Society. Detailed written records were completed and digital photographic surveys of the site were also completed. Training in survey techniques was provided to the members of the archaeological society. <1>
