Technique(s)

Date

July 2014

Description

A walkover survey was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2014, prior to the proposed installation of a hydro-electric scheme above Leckmelm and Campbeltown by Loch Broom. Newly identified features included two dry stone rectangular shieling huts, both remarkably similar at 6.5 x 2.5m, surviving up to 1m high, and oriented c. E–W. Several courses were visible in the external walls and one possible internal division was noted. A small stretch of dry stone walling c2.5m long and 0.6m high with vertical capstones was also recorded. This structure possibly formed part of a dam or enclosure as it sealed a low point in a natural boggy bowl. It was recommended that the development should avoid these features and stick to existing access tracks as far as possible. <1> Report awaited as of 07/04/2020.
