EHG5722 - DBA and walkover survey - Knocknagael to Clune Wood Cable

Technique(s)

Date

2020

Description

A desk-based assessment (DBA) and walkover survey were carried out by Highland Archaeology Services in 2020 in advance of the laying of a new cable between Knocknagael Sub-station and Clune Wood near Loch Ashie, south of Inverness. The DBA noted that this was an area of high archaeological activity, particularly in the form of many prehistoric hut circles and field systems. There was evidence of post-medieval farming, and General Wade’s original Inverness to Fort William road also runs along parallel to the proposed route. The walkover survey identified and recorded 36 features or small groups of features, most of which had already been noted in the DBA. These included the remains of at least 13 dykes or walls - some of which are probably prehistoric. Also 6 hut circles or possible hut circles and 6 quarries, probably associated with the construction of the Wade road. Recommendations were made for further work including marking off and a watching brief across parts of the route. <1>
