EHG5857 - Watching brief - new access road, Achmore, Sutherland

Technique(s)

Organisation

Catherine Dagg

Date

June 2021

Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by C Dagg in 2021 over two days on topsoil stripping for a new access road along the route of a previous trackway at Achmore, Sutherland. Construction features associated with the original trackway were noted at only one location, the south side of the ford of a small watercourse. Pre-existing openings through four older turf and rubble dykes were widened and construction features noted. One artefact dating to probably the Iron Age in the form of a small quartz hammerstone was retrieved from the topsoil but was not associated with any structure or deposit and is taken to be a chance find. <1>
