Description

A programme of archaeological excavation and recording was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2022 at the site of an abandoned rural settlement at Allt Lagain Bhain, Dundreggan, Glen Moriston. This project was commissioned by BEAR Scotland as the noted features are scheduled to be removed as part of permanent road-widening works. Fieldwork followed a preliminary review of documentary evidence and previous fieldwork undertaken to the south west of the site (see EHG5165 & EHG5285). The additional archaeological works involved the excavation of a dwelling structure with associated yard, a kaleyard garden, a larger dwelling which included a byre and consisted of three separate rooms within the dwelling, a two-bay building which appeared to have been associated with agricultural use, and an associated track/road running past the rear of the larger dwelling to the two-bay building. Finds recovered during the excavation, combined with documentary evidence, indicate that the settlement was probably after the first part of the C19 and occupied until the early-mid C20. The remains of an earlier part of the A887 road which is preserved in two detached sections as a flat grassed earthwork was also recorded. This report sets the results of the project and all the record tables. It includes recommendations for a final stage of post-excavation reporting work to ensure that the archaeological evidence recorded on-site is fully disseminated. <1>
