Date

Sept 1997

Description

A rapid archaeological surveywas conducted of the area of the proposed plantation Dale Farm, Halkirk, Caithness. The purpose of this survey was to assess the nature and importance of the archaeological remains in this area and to make recommendations for their protection during planting operations and from subsequent tree growth. The plantation was being established under the Woodland Grant Scheme. The survey was carried out in two parts. The first consisted of a desk-bound examination of existing records in the Sites & Monuments Register of Highland Council's Archaeology Service, earlier map sources held by Highland Council Archive Service and secondary documentary references from Inverness Reference Library. A field visit was carried out on the 22nd August 1997 in warm, dry conditions. It is considered that the most important archaeological features of the farm have now been recorded. <1>
