Full Description

A structure, possibly a building at Shurrery.

A structure recorded by R Mercer in 1982 during a survey undertaken by the University of Edinburgh, one of several over a number of years in Caithness: Site FOR 300: Structure. Dimensions: 6.25m x 2.5m. Rectangular enclosure with boulders and stone. Orientation: NW-SE. 10m SW of Mon 299. Associated with Mons. 299, 301, 303, 304, 305, 306, 311, and 312. Elevation: 300' OD. ND 036580. (Fig. 85). <1>

This structure is described as being 10m to the SW of FOR 299 (see MHG1560) and is shown as such in the report on Fig. 85 but there is nothing visible at this location on any available vertical APs or in LiDAR data for the area gathered in 2011 by AOC as part of the mitigation for the visual impact on the archaeological landscape associated with the proposed Baillie Hill windfarm. However, the depiction of this structure in Fig. 85 does match another structure/building which lies in the correct orientation c.55m to the SW (and not apparently otherwise recorded by Mercer in 1982), but because of the large difference in distances, this structure has been allocated its own record (see MHG61827) [IS-L 19/06/2020].

GIS spatial data amended in 2020 according to the description as given in <1>.

Note: the linked Canmore record has an incorrect 1982 survey archive plan site reference number [IS-L 19/06/2020].
