Full Description

A hut circle at A'ghairbhe, Glen Torridon.

This hut circle, discovered by a contractor working on an on-going woodland restoration scheme in Glen Torridon, measures about 5m in diameter within a wall about 1.5m in thickness. The site had been planted with commercial tree species in the 1960's and some of the stumps protrude from the walls, which are covered in a thick layer of moss. The area surrounding the hut circle has been marked by canes and there will be no tree planting within 10 metres of the site; efforts will also be made to ensure the site is kept free of regenerating trees. Located by hand-held GPS. Information by email from Terry Doe, 14 November 2007. <1>

202060 859861 JAN031 Glen Torridon: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in good condition and lies on a natural knoll on a gentle east facing slope in a felled woodland plantation. Wall facings ae visible as is the ring bank. The platform is built out from the slope. The surrounding landscape is covered mainly with heather and some grass. Inside the HC vegetation cover is predominately heather with some grass and moss. The HC is 200 m from Kinlochewe River and 1500m from Loch Maree, a sea loch. Views from the site are panoramic inland. Average inner diameter is 5.25m, outer diameter is 9.5m.The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick with maximum height 0.8m. A possible entrance faces west, is mounded, and is degraded by tree stumps. On the east side of the structure there is a drop off to ground level of around 1.5m. <2> <3>
