Full Description

A hut circle at North Erradale near Gairloch.

174584 881566 North Erradale Little Lodge AMC210: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes and J Buchanan in 2009 as part of research for A Welti for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The circular stone structure sits on a natural shoulder of a gentle slope, 20m from a stream. It is dug into and built out from this slope and is down hill from, but within sight of, all 6 others in N Erradale group, at a distance of 500 to 600m, (AM001 (see MHG53321) ,002 (see MHG57249), 003 (see MHG57250), 004 (see MHG57251) and 005 (see MHG53339). The NW sector of walling has been robbed of stone. A field boundary of turf and stone covered in heather abuts the N edge of the HC and runs to N. The average inner diameter of the structure is 7.4m, the outer diameter is 11.2m. The stone walling is double skinned and is largely submerged by heather and grass. It is 1.8m thick with maximum height 0.3m. No entrance is discernable. <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 29/03/2017].

A survey of North Erradale was undertaken in 2013 by Macinnes, A. Harnden, A. Blakey, R. and researched by Macintyre, I.
