Full Description

A hut circle at Meall Glac na Daraich near Gairloch.

175693 880758 Meall Glac na Daraich 3 AMC003: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2009 as part of research for A Welti for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This oval stone structure is set on a level terrace on a steep hillside amongst rocky outcrops. The walls contain a lot of stone which has not been overgrown with vegetation, hence the structure may have been built up at a later date to be used as animal enclosure. There is a small ruined rectangular enclosure under an outcrop to W of hut circle. The structure has inner diameters 5.5m and 6.2m, and outer diameters 7.5m and 9.4m. The double skinned wall is 1m thick with maximum height 1m. The entrance faces east and has external width of 0.5m, internal width is 0.75m. Passage length is 1.2m. This HC may be associated with the N Erradale group around AM001 (see MHG53321) (2000m distant) with AMC001 (see MHG57254), 002 (see MHG57255) (700m distant) and also with the Sand River sites (1000m distant) along similar contours. A conclusion may be drawn that whole hillside from Sand River to North Erradale was settled, all facing S. or SE. Nothing has been found on the N facing slopes. <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 29/03/2017].
