Full Description

A hut circle at Meall na Dubh near Gairloch.

179556 878533 Meall na Dubh 3 HAB011: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure has a platform built up all round from the surrounding gentle east facing slope. It is 50m from a river, 100m from a freshwater loch, and 1000m from the sea. There are panoramic views to both land and sea. The surrounding landscape is grazed and is a mixture of heather and grass. The site is exposed, with panoramic views of land and sea. The HC has substantial stone walls and a lot of loose stone. An enclosure has been added on the E side, probably with stone robbed from the HC. There is a sheep fank nearby, and enclosures and rigs which may or may not be contemporary with the HC. Average inner diameter is 7.2m, external diameter is 12m. The double skinned wall is 1.8m thick with maximum height 1.0m. The entrancwe faces southeast and has width externally 1.5m, width internally 1.0m, and passage length 2.0m. Entrance terminals are extended. HAB011 may be associated with HAB009 (see MHG57306) distant 300m, HAB010 (see MHG57307) distant 300m and HAB012 (see MHG57309) distant 400m. <1> <2>
