Full Description

A hut circle near Achiltibuie Stores.

202687 909776 Achiltibuie Stores 2 CMM011: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C MacNeilage in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This slightly oval stone structure sits on a natural terrace , set into a very gentle heather covered west facing slope with wide views to inland and sea.appears linked with CMM010 (see MHG57334), at a distance of 20m as well as CMM012 (see MHG25169), at a distance of 500m, all being on 50m contour. Clearance cairns are evident in the vicinity but outlines are obscured by mature heather. It is 20m from a stream, and 1000 m from both the sea to the west and Loch Vatachan to the northwest. A possible burnt mound is near to HC. The structure is in fair condition. Substantial edging stones are visible as is the the ring bank. Internal diameter N/S is7.5m, E/W is 6.0m. External diameter N/S is 6.0m, E/W is 9.3m. A large boulder sits alongside the ring bank and to east of the structure. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick with maximum height 0.4m. No entrance could be discerned. 7m to W of HC is a circular arc of stones, diam 5.4m. This could be remains of a further HC, or sheiling footings. The structure appears linked with CMM010, at a distance of 20m as well as CMM012, at a distance of 500m, all being on 50m contour. It is 700m distant from CMM203.
