Full Description

A hut circle at Torr Garve, near Applecross.

171483 843632 Torr Garve 2 HK010: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and H Keiro in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This massive circular HC is part of a cluster of 6. HK010 and HK009 (see MHG57806) are sited 500m S of the Applecross broch and campsite, and together with HK012 (see MHG57809), HK011 (see MHG57808), and BB500 (see MHG57814), are all on or around the same contour (70m to 76m) in a narrow plateau stretching S from HK010 and passing to E of Tor Mor. HK010 is on the edge of woodland and is densely submerged in bracken. A stony embankment buttresses the W side of the structure. From the possible entrance an ancient wall and a pathway lead to the river at 30 m distance. The HC wall is thick and consists of a massive jumble of stones with no facing stones. An ancient settlement lies in the woods 100m from HK010, at NG71265 43607, (see photos). Average inner diameter of the HC is 15.5m, outer diam is 17.8 (only measured in one direction). Wall is 1.4m thick, max height 0.6m. The possible entrance is 1.1m wide externally and 1.3m internally with entrance passage length 2.2m. This makes extended terminals likely although this could not be ascertained on the ground. HK010 is at a distance of 100m from HK009, 400m from BB500 and 500m from HK012. <1> <2>
