Full Description

A hut circle near Leac Dubh to the northwest of Mellon Charles.

183986 892635 Mellon Charles to Slaggan 2 JAN010: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2013 as part of research on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The HC sits at the base of a steep slope. The platform is on a terrace at the edge of a raised beach. To the S there is a steep drop to the beach (a bay sheltered from the N). Average internal diameter is 7m, external diameter is 9.25m, double skinned wall thickness is 1.4m, max wall height is 0.5m. The probable entrance faces E and the external width is 0.8m, with entrance length 1m. Entrance terminals are standard.
10 m to NW of the HC is a jumbled pile of stones, possibly the remains of a shieling. Inside the HC are shieling remains. The location of this HC is very exposed and remote and there must have been a good reason to construct it here. <1> <2>
