Full Description

A hut circle near Badfearn, Aultbea.

189286 889225 Badfearn 4 JAN015: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The circular structure has average internal diameter 6.5m, external diameter 9.75m. Double skinned wall has thickness 1.7m with max height 0.4m. Entrance orientation is N, which raises doubts as to whether it was a dwelling. Entrance width is 2m internally and 1m externally, with standard terminals. The structure lies within an area of large glacial boulders. The walls are constructed of huge boulders; two extra large ones are at the entrance. A platform extends out from the entrance, partly circular. This may be an earlier structure. Within the same enclosure is a circular bracken covered mound, diameter 7m, GR NG89299 89164, possibly a further roundhouse or a cairn (see MHG). The HC is probably associated with JAN012 (see MHG58898), JAN013 (see MHG58899), JAN014 (see MHG58900), JAN019 (see MHG58902), JAN020 (see MHG58903) and JAN021 (see MHG58904), mostly within 500m of one another. This cluster is 1000m E of MR002 (see MHG58701) and 1500m S of the Laide Wood group, JMC001-JMC006 and JAN011 (see MHG58069-MHG58074 & MHG58068) <1> <2>
