Full Description

A hut circle near Badfearn, Aultbea.

189505 889384 Badfearn 5 JAN019: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This is a substantial roundhouse. It lies on a medium slope and is in good condition. Walls are double skinned with average inner diameter 9.1m, outer diameter 12.5m. The wall thickness is 1.7m with a max height of 0.7m. The entrance is 2m wide externally and 1m internally. Entrance length is 2m with extended terminals and quartzite boulders at the outer edges. These would have caught the suns rays. There is a mound in the centre of the structure. The HC is probably associated with JAN012 (see MHG58898), JAN013 (see MHG58899), JAN015 (see MHG58900), JAN019 (see MHG58902), JAN020 (see MHG58903) and JAN021 (see MHG58904), mostly within 500m of one another. This cluster is 1000m E of MR002 (see MHG58701) and 1500m S of the Laide Wood group, JMC001-JMC006 and JAN011 (see MHG58069-MHG58074 & MHG58068). <1> <2>
