Full Description

A hut circle near Badfearn, Aultbea.

189647 889902 Badfearn 7 JAN021: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure lies on a very gentle slope and is in good condition. The site is 200m from a stream, 500m from a freshwater loch and 2000m from the sea. The surrounding landscape is stony heather covered moorland. The site is within an area of glacial boulders. Views are panoramic to land and sea. Vegetation within the structure is predominately bracken. The double skinned walls consist of substantial boulders. Two extra large boulders are situated at the entrance. A platform bounded by a circular arc extends out from the entrance; this may be the remains of an earlier hut circle. Average internal diameter is 6.75m, external diameter is 9.65m. Wall thickness is 1.2m with maximum height 0.8m. The probable entrance faces East with external width 1.5m, internal width 1.1m and passage length 1.3m. The HC is probably associated with JAN013 (see MHG58899), JAN014 (see MHG58900), JAN015 (see MHG58901), JAN019 (see MHG58902), JAN020 (see MHG58903) and JAN021 (see MHG58904), although it is 600m from the main cluster and slightly isolated from it. This cluster is 1000m E of MR002 (see MHG58701) and 1500m S of the Laide Wood group, JMC001-JMC006 and JAN011 (see MHG58069-MHG58074 & MHG58068) <1> <2>
