Full Description

A hut circle at Torr Na H-Ulaidhe, Auchtercairn.

180609 877081 Torr Na H-Ulaidhe 7 (Auchtercairn R9) JF001: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes and J Fenton in 2011 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This HC is one of 10 circular stone structures in the Auchtercairn area above and to the east of Gairloch. JF001 lies on a platform built out from and dug into a gentle south facing slope with panoramic views to the sea which is 500m distant. Field boundaries of turf and stone lie to the north and west. A boundary wall runs east/west and is tangential to the north western arc of the HC wall. The surrounding terrain slopes steeply down in a southerly direction to a stream at a distance of 100m. The surrounding vegetation is a mixture of heather, bracken and grass with some trees. The interior of the HC is covered with bracken and grass. Average inner diameter is 9.75m, outer diameter is 13.0m. The double skinned wall is 1.3m thick with maximum height 0.6m. No entrance is discernable. JF001 is 40m from AH005 (see MHG7523) and 100m from AH006 (see MHG57484). <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

A small targeted excavation of JF001, supervised by M Wildgoose, was carried out at the end of the wedigs project. Charcoal from the hearth yielded a mid Bronze Age date and dating charcoal from under the tangential field wall gave a medieval date. Report forthcoming.

GIS data created in 2019 according to location as seen on 2009 vertical APs. <3>
