Full Description

A hut circle at Dundonnell.

212286 885488 DC003 Dundonnell 9 Croftown track: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, D Curtis and C Dagg in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This is one of a group of circular stone structures at a high elevation on the slopes of Meall an Dubhe and situated near to the 'Croftown track ' leading from near to Dundonnell House, over steep terrain to Achlunachan and Clachan. The elevation of DC003 is 214m. It is in fair condition, is 10m from a stream and is 800m from the Dundonnell River which flows along the base of the steeply sloping sides of the valley below. The sea loch Little Loch Broom is 5.1km downstream. The river is wide and may have been partly navigable. From the site there are panoramic views inland. Surrounding vegetation is mostly grass with some bracken. Inside the structure there is an equal amount of grass and bracken. The platform is dug into and built out from a moderate SE facing slope. There is tumbled stone both inside and outside the structure which precluded accurate measurements. An orthostat 0.7m in height stands in the walling to the west. A small pen 3 courses high has been built into the double skinned wall to the NNW. Average outer diameter of DC003 is 11.5m. No inner measurement was taken. Wall thickness was 1.5m with maximum height 0.3m, apart from the orthostat at 0.7m. A possible entrance facing SE opened onto a SE slope. The passage had internal width 0.5m and length 1.8m. DC003 is 20m downslope from GSN001 (see MHG59901). <1> <2>
