Full Description

A hut circle at Inverlael, Lochbroom.

218835 886505 SM012 Inverlael Allt a Moullin 2: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, P Newling and S MacKenzie in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This HC is one of a group of 3 circular stone structures sited on breaks of a steep slope with a SW aspect, beside Allt a Moulin and above the Lael Forest tree plantation. SM012 is in poor condition and has been much robbed out, probably to construct two shieling huts. One shieling, dimensions 6m x 3m is inside the HC and is well built with several courses of a well built wall visible. The other shieling, dimensions 7m x 4m abutts the HC wall on the SE, just N of the possible HC entrance. The platform of SM012 is on a natural terrace and is dug into and built out from a moderately steep slope. The vegetation, both surrounding the structure and inside it, is a mixture of heather, bracken and grass. The outer diameter of the structure is 14m. The construction of the walling could not be determined although wall facing stones were visible. Its maximum height is 0.5m. The possible entrance faces SE and a fallen orthostat lies at the S end of the entrance passage. SM012 lies 12m upslope from SM011 (see MHG) and 47m from SM013 (MHG59961). <1> <2>
