Full Description

A hut circle near Second Coast on Gruinard Bay.

192721 890537 JAN018 Second Coast 3: The site was visited by A MacInnes in 2014 as part of research for a dissertation by A Welti on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in good condition and lies on a moderate NE facing slope. The surrounding vegetation both inside and outside the structure is predominately grass. The site is in a field on outlying crofting ground and hence vegetation has been altered with cultivation. JAN018 is 500m from a stream, 300m from the sea at Gruinard Bay and 100m from fresh water Loch Moine Sheilg. Views from the site are panoramic both inland and out to sea. The platfrom is dug into and built out from the slope. Average inner diameter is 9m, outer diameter is 11.75m. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick with maximum height 0.8m. A definite entrance faces east with external width 1.3m, internal width 1.5m and passage length 2.7m, giving extended entrance terminals. The ring bank and many wall facing stones are clearly visible. There is a smaller structure 18m upslope to the SW, with dimensions 2x1.4m, probably a shieling. JAN018 is at a distance of 550m from JAN016 (see MHG60261) and 400m from JAN17 (MHG60263). Nearby is a further circular structure on a knoll beside the road, at NG92464 90940. This warrants further investigation (see MHG60266). <1> <2>
