Full Description

A hut circle at Kernsary.

189347 878760 AEMC018 Kernsary 2: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2011 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in fair condition and lies in the 'bow' of a stream, within and adjacent to an enclosure, on level ground, and below a track which runs N/S through hilly and rocky terrain. Two clearance cairns are situated around 10m from the site. Vegetation in the surrounding area is a mixture of heather, bracken and grass, and inside the structure it is bracken and grass with no heather. The enclosure which surrounds the structure is covered with bracken and grass. There is too much tumble around the hut circle to enable accurate measurements. There is no apparent platform but the ring bank and wall facings are visible. The site is 30m from a stream and 200m from Allt na Creige which runs into Loch Kernsary at a distance of 800m from the HC. Average inner diameter is 10.2m, outer diameter is 14.4m. The double skinned wall is 1.3m thick with maximum height 0.6m. A probable entrance faces NE. Entrance width is 1.1m externally, 1.0m internally with passage length 2.2m. This measurement may be exaggerated by tumble and probably does not indicate an extended entrance. The extensive tumble all around the srtucture may indicate later reuse of the site. <1> <2>
