Full Description

A hut circle at Dubh Chlais.

211760 923115 GS025 Dubh Chlais 2: The hut circle was visited by G Sleight in 2013 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in fair condition and lies on a moderate SE facing slope in a rough landscape surrounded by low rocky hills. The surrounding landscape vegetation is mainly bracken with some grass and heather. Inside the structure vegetation is almost total bracken. The site is 50m from a stream 500m from the River Inver, 1500m from fresh water Loch Bad na Goibhre and 2000m from the sea loch, Loch Inver. Views from the site are panoramic, inland. Average inner diameter is 7.9m, outer diameter is 11.2m. A possible entrance faces SW. No other measurements were possible. The HC platform is dug into and built up from the slope. Very little walling remains but the platform, especially where revetted into the north slope, is well preserved. It is level with a few stones lying around the edges which may be remnants of walling. GS024 is better preserved and lies upslope at a distance of 20m to NE (see MHG60594). GS022 lies 300m away (see MHG19449). GS023 is at a distance of 100m (see MHG19450). <1> <2>
