Full Description

A Hut circle at Uig.

139315 862482 Uig South 1 JAN063: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes, B Blackburn and M Wildgoose in 2018 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. A cluster of 14 roundhouses are scattered over a 1000m x 500m area of grazed drassland at South Cuil, on slopes varying from gentle to steep, and all facing west over Uig Bay. Numerous field walls and enclosures, many of which appear ancient, indicate long term usage of this grazing land. Two clearance cairns are visible at a distance of around 30m from this HC. A farm track runs NE/SW below most of the HC cluster and along the fairly level base of the sloping ground. A standing stone (see MHG5772) which could indicate ritual activities, is at a distance of 360m from JAN063. This HC is a circular stone structure in fair condition, sited on a natural terrace in gently sloping surroundings. Two power poles have been inserted into the ground a few metres to the north of the HC, and JAN064, Uig South 3 (see MHG61118), is sited 6m to the west of JAN063. The surrounding landscape is grassland, as is the vegetation inside the structure. The interior is wet. The site is 25m from a stream and 300m from the sea and has panoramic views to land and sea. Interior diameter averages 10.9m, exterior diameter is 13.7m.The double skinned wall is 1.4m thick with maximum height 0.3m and is filled with stones. The probable entrance faces SW and has external width 2m, internal width 1.5m and passage length 1.6m. These measurements show that the terminals are slightly extended (see sketch). Wall facings and some stones are visible, as are parts of the ring bank. JAN063 is distant 6m from JAN064, and 100m from BB701 (see MHG61120). <1> <2>
