Full Description

A hut circle at Uig.

139403 862733 Uig S 4 JAN065: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, A MacInnes, B Blackburn and M Wildgoose in 2018 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. A cluster of 14 roundhouses are scattered over a 1000m x 500m area of grazed grassland at South Cuil, on slopes varying from gentle to steep, and all facing west over Uig Bay. Numerous field walls and enclosures, many of which appear ancient, indicate long term usage of this grazing land. A farm track runs NE/SW below most of the HC cluster and along the fairly level base of the sloping ground. A standing stone (MHG5772) which could indicate ritual activities, is at a distance of 100m from JAN065. This circular stone structure is sited on a natural terrace in gently sloping surroundings and is in good condition. The surrounding landscape is grassland as is the vegetation inside the structure. The site is 60m from a stream, 300m from the sea and has panoramic views to land and sea. Internal diameter average 11.5m, external diameter is 13.5m. The double skinned wall is 2m thick with maximum height 0.3m. A track with width 2m, together with side dykes width 1.5m, runs with a NE/SW alignment through the centre of the structure. The ring bank and some stones are visible. JAN065 is at a distance of 200m from BB701 (see MHG61120) and JAN066 (see MHG61123). <1> <2>
