Full Description

A hut circle at Lag na Saille, Achiltibuie.

205463 912905 Lag na Saille 4 JF010: The hut circle was visited by A Welti, C MacNeilage, J Fenton and others in 2013 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This structure is in fair condition. It is one of a group of 5 circular stone structures lying on terraces along the banks of a steep-sided valley above a fast flowing burn. The burn emerges into a sheltered bay at Lag na Saille. There are many signs of later cultivation in the form of lazy beds, later enclosure walls and vegetation change. The landscape is sloping, hilly and rocky. Views from the site are panoramic over land and sea. JF010 is at a distance of 300m from a burn and 400m from the sea. The vegetation in the surrounding landscape consists mainly of heather with some bracken and grass. Inside, the structure is being submerged by bracken. The platform is built out from a moderate W facing slope. Average inner diameter is 8.15m, exterior diameter is 11.5m. The double skinned wall is 2m thick with maximum height 0.5m. A probable entrance faces S, with external width 1.7m and passage length 2.0m. The ring bank and some wall facings and other stones are visible. There is a later square enclosure with dimensions 2m x 2m in the centre of the structure and a shieling hut lies 20m to the NW. There is a cairn, probably clearance, 5m to S of the probable entrance. JF010 is 25m from CMM6 (see MHG), and 450m from DC201 (see MHG). <1> <2>
