Full Description

A hut circle at Creag Bheag, Dundonnel.

211756 886102 Creag Bheag 1 IB203: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and I Brandt in 2019 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in good condition. It lies 8m from a smaller circular structure, IB204 (see MHG). These two structures are sited high above the Dundonnell River and Strath Beag. They sit on a terrace which breaks a long and very steep slope at a similar elevation to that of the clusters of hut circles sited approximately 1000m to the south. These are recorded as DC003 (see MHG), CB100 (see MHG) and others including SM101 (see MHG) which is only 400m away from IB203, across a deep gorge. From the site of IB203 there are panoramic views of land and sea. The landscape around the structure is a mixture of heather, grass and bracken with some woodland. Inside IB203 is the same mix of heather, grass and bracken. The structure is 100m from a fast flowing stream and 500m upslope from the Dundonnell River in the valley beneath. The platform is levelled out on a moderate south facing slope which is part of a fairly level terrace. The walling is double skinned, with inner and outer facing stones and is 1.7m thick, 0.7m high. A possible entrance faces west, with a passage length 1.5m and width externally 0.7m and internally 1.0m. The structure shows wall facings, both inside and out, also the ring bank, and it is submerged in heather, bracken, moss and bog. <1> <2>
