A hut circle in Gleann Udalain.

At NG 8584 2857 is a circular stone-walled hut measuring 8.6m in diameter within a wall 1.3m thick. Entrance not evident. Surveyed at 1:10,000. Visited by OS (J M) 5 June 1974.

185847 828561 Glen Udelain 1 JDG002: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and M Wildgoose in 2009 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular HC sits on a natural terrace near the foot of a steep W facing slope, at elevation 200m. It may be associated with JDG003, 600m distant to S on the same contour. It is 700m S of JM002 which is at a lower elevation on a flood plain. Streams run to S and N, 150m distant. The structure is circular, average inner diameter is 8.5m, outer is 10.5m. Double skinned wall thickness is 1m, walls stand to 0.4m high. There is a shieling upslope from the structure. <1> <2>
