Date

May 2000

Description

An initial evaluation of a proposed development site at Holm Mains Farm, Inverness, was undertaken in May 2000 by SUAT. Approximately 50% of the total development area had initially been subject to magnetometry survey (see EHG750) and subsequently 35 trenches were machine excavated in the north-western part of the site, equivalent to 2% of the site. The trenchers varied in length from 15 to 60m. In several instances, ie Trenches I, Y and Z, larger areas were excavated in order to loacte the extent of features. In many instances, excavation did not confirm the geophysical survey results. Two discrete areas of the site produced archaeological remains which consisted of five postholes of indeterminable date, two large stone-filled pits and one linear features. Further evaluation works were recommended. <1> The excavation assemblage was submitted to Treasure Trove (TT 110/09) and allocated to Inverness Museum. See attached TT report. <2> <3>
