EHG5398 - Walkover survey - proposed Loch Bhuide substation

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Archaeology Services Ltd

Date

April-Aug 2012

Description

A walkover survey of the areas proposed for a new substation near Loch Bhuide, Sutherland, was carried out in March 2011 by Highland Archaeology Services. Supplementary site visits were made on 27 April and 15 August 2012 to examine details of possible impacts on cultural heritage features by the siting of towers and connections. As access had not been possible in 2011 to the site finally chosen for the substation (Site A), this was further checked as far as possible. Most of the substation site itself remains within a dense stand of commercial forestry planted on deep forestry ploughing, which appears to have destroyed any archaeology. The area had previous been surveyed by CFA in 2008-10 (see EHG3360) and sites recorded at that time were re-visited. Further assessments were made to check for known cultural heritage features adjacent to the U3521 Strathcarnoch Road to ensure the road improvement works would not adversely affect any features identified. <1> The results of the walkover were incorporated into the Environmental Assessment for the site. <2>
