Description
A watching brief was undertaken by C Dagg in 2022 in advance of the construction of a new sales and welfare building and associated extension of the existing access at Nordmann Croft, Artafallie, North Kessock. Foundation trenches were dug by machine to a depth of 600mm. One context was noted: a mixed deposit consisting of lenses of clay, sand, cobble material consistent with a sequence of dumps of redeposited material. The majority of this material was fairly homogeneous but some discrete lenses could be discerned. The findings of the controlled strip were consistent with the initial desk-based conclusion that the entire development area has been covered by a layer of redeposited material to an unknown depth not reached during excavation of foundation trenches. The assumption was made that, as reported, this material came from construction of the adjacent A9 trunk road. No further archaeological work was advised for this development. <1>
