Date

Description
A trial trench evaluation was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2023 in advance of the construction of an extension to the north east side of grade C Listed Building, Aldernaig Mill, Invergarry. The fieldwork was designed to identify and record archaeological remains that may be disturbed by the proposed development, particularly those that may pertain to the historic use of the building as a grain mill. The machine excavation of a single trench, approximately 12m² in size, was conducted on the 8th of February, in the area to the north east of the mill building. At this location the remains of the wheel slot to the mill were uncovered, comprising a dressed stone built wall running parallel to the mill, held together with pale yellow lime mortar that had been pointed. No other negative features were identified. Given that the features that may be disturbed by the development have now been recorded, no further archaeological fieldwork was recommended. <1>
A basic external photographic survey was also previously undertaken (see EHG6017).
