Description

Archaeological recording and remedial works were carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2023 at Camore Wood, Dornoch. The archaeological work was required due to recent forestry operations over the winter months of 2022-23 which resulted in damage to five scheduled areas covering a number of prehistoric hut circles. Prior to any invasive work, a walkover survey of the full scheduled settlement was undertaken, alongside measured survey and terrain modelling of three damaged hut circles (Sites 1-3), to assess the current condition and any damage to the scheduled monuments. The extent and layout of each roundhouse, along with any surrounding features, was recorded using a Trimble DGPS. Written descriptions for each site were recorded and any surveyed sites were recorded using high resolution digital photography. Additional measured survey and terrain modelling was carried out at the damaged hut circle Sites 1-3. Prior to survey, the sites were cleared of surface vegetation, including bracken, low scrub, and any small self-set trees. Plans of the sites were created using a Trimble DGPS and Total Station and, the extent of the sites and any areas of damage was recorded. Terrain modelling was done through the process of photogrammetry, using both hand-held and drone mounted cameras. Additional vertical and oblique aerial photographs were taken using a drone. The surveys provided an up-to-date assessment of the condition and identified damage at ten of the sites. The damage consisted of: heavy machine tracking at Sites 1, 2 and 16; light machine tracking at Sites 3, 8, 10a, and 10b; desire paths causing minimal disturbance at Sites 6 and 9b; and disturbance caused by fallen trees and brash piles at Site 10b. After completion of the surveys, a programme of excavation was undertaken to assess and record the impact of damage to Sites 1-3 (see EHG6103). A programme of post-excavation analysis was recommended, as well as remediation comprising reprofiling and reforming of the earthworks. <1>
