Description

A walkover survey was undertaken by CFA Archaeology in 2023 in advance of the proposed construction of a pedestrian tunnel and the installation of a drystone wall on Land at Hope, Strathmore. The majority of the construction works across this area related to the installation of a new drystone wall. Four features were identified and recorded during the walkover survey. The remains of two denuded drystone walls were identified. The plans at the time were for the replacement of these walls with a new wall. They were recorded as part of the survey and it was considered that no further recording would be required to mitigate their loss. The former entrance to Hope Lodge was identified. This formed part of the curtilage of Hope Lodge and as such was B listed along with the Lodge (LB493). The existing proposals would impact on this and Listed Building Consent would be required for the works. It was considered tha some additional photographic recording of the entrance may be required as additional mitigation for any loss, however, this survey had located and mapped the entrance and a range of photographs had been taken. The walkover survey identified that the new proposed wall would be predominantly located on the road verge and that there would be little or no archaeological potential in those areas so no additional work was recommended in mitigation during its construction. <1>
