Date
Aug 2023
Description
An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2023 over three land parcels at Balvraid Croft, Glenelg, ahead of a woodland creation proposal. The survey was required in order to assess and record the nature and extent of any upstanding archaeological remains affected by the proposed development. The survey was conducted on 23rd August 2023, during which nine assets were recorded, comprising post-medieval shielings, turf-and-stone dykes and enclosures, a whisky still and associated structure, and a prehistoric hut circle. The survey areas also lay in close proximity to Dun Grugaig, a prehistoric broch-like fort. Buffer zones were recommended for the upstanding assets within the survey areas to protect them from any damage during the woodland planting. An area of no planting was also recommended on the lower-lying ground northeast of Dun Grugaig to preserve its landscape setting. <1>
