Description

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken by Clyde Archaeology in 2023 in relation to a proposed underground cable south of Mybster, Caithness. Twenty assets related to the historic environment were recorded through desk-based research and field survey within a 50m wide corridor around the proposed cable route (25m either side of the route). The survey corridor was extended at the southern end due to uncertainty about the final cable position and termination point. Heritage assets identified included Achavanich Stone Setting Scheduled Monument (S420). The non-designated assets of local value comprised a drove stance, several now ruined buildings shown as roofed on the first edition OS maps surveyed in 1871 and a lade, while those of lesser value included a canalised burn, peat cuttings, roadside quarries, ephemeral remains of a possible road and field boundary and a small modern clearance cairn. The potential for buried archaeology to be present varied between low and moderate. <1>
