Description
A walkover survey was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024 on land 3,400m to the southeast of Ben Armine Lodge in Rogart, Sutherland, ahead of the construction of a telecommunications mast and an access track. The survey formed the first phase of archaeological works, with the objective to inform on the need for and scope of further archaeological works. The survey covered the proposed access route and the proposed site. A buffer of 10m to either side was observed. One heritage asset was recorded, a possible raised earthwork, of which the function and date were unclear. It was considered possible that this related to land drainage in the post-medieval or modern period and was considered to be of low importance; however, an earlier origin could not be excluded. No other archaeological remains were observed. The possible earthwork was located within the proposed development area and would be impacted by intrusive construction works. It was considered that a watching brief may therefore be required to record the earthwork and confirm whether this was of archaeological significance, or a natural feature. <1>
