Description

A damage recording exercise was undertaken by CFA Archaeology in 2022 at Hilton of Cadboll, Chapel and Site of Cross Slab, Ross and Cromarty, a Property in Care (PIC299) under the guardianship of Historic Environment Scotland (HES). The PIC boundary includes, and extends beyond, the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM90320). Work was undertaken under the terms of the Minor Archaeological Services Call-off Contract with HES. The Scheduled area comprises the remains of the Chapel and the area immediately around it. Several areas of damage in the form of unauthorised pit digging (possibly associated with illegal metal detecting) were reported across the Property in Care (PIC) by subcontractors on the site and by members of the public. Although Pit 10 was on the outside of the Chapel boundary fence it was within the boundary of the Scheduled Monument which extends beyond the fence line. The work comprised of emergency re-excavation, recording, re-turfing and survey of ten pits. Of the ten pits recorded, five produced direct evidence of metal finds within them (pits 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10). The metal finds were all modern and appeared to have been thrown back into the hole after excavation or discarded immediately adjacent to the pit. The remaining five pits showed no evidence of any finds in or within their vicinity. Nine of the pits, 1-9, were in two NW-SE running rows that respected the line of the boundary fence implying a systematic, intentional, covering of the area. These pits lay within the Property in Care Boundary. Pit 10 was slightly offset from the rows and lay within the Scheduled Monument boundary. <1>
