Description

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken by CFA Archaeology in 2005 to inform an environmental statement of the proposed Invercassley Wind Farm. Two reconnaissance field walkover surveys were undertaken within the proposed site boundary between 30th May 2005 and 3rd June 2005 and between 5th and 8th July 2005. This fieldwork was conducted to: confirm the presence/absence, character and condition of the sites, monuments and landscape features identified by the desk-based assessment; assess the topography and geomorphology of the proposed development area to aid in the identification of areas with potential for undiscovered buried remains; to identify any further features of cultural heritage interest not detailed in the desk studies, these were recorded using a GPS. Thirteen cultural heritage sites were identified within the site with a further four sites close to the site boundary. Of the sites, eight of them were identified from the wakover survey. Field survey also established the baseline condition of the sites identified during the desk-base assessment. No sites considered to be of national or regional importance were identified within the site. Thirteen Scheduled Monuments were located within 10km of the site and were considered to be key external receptors. No direct or indirect impacts were predicted for the seventeen cultural heritage sites recorded within or in proximity to, the site. In addition to site-specific predictions, it was considered that ground-disturbing excavations associated with the proposed development components would have an adverse effect on any unrecorded, buried archaeological remains present in those areas. Baseline information suggested that the areas to be occupied by construction components should be judged to be of low archaeological potential. Therefore the potential impact on undiscovered remains was considered to be negligible. <1>
