EHG6281 - Watching brief - underground cabling, near Green Hill Broch, Reiss
Technique(s)
Organisation
Highland Archaeology Services Ltd
Date
Aug 2023-Apr 2024
Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2023-4 near Green Hill Broch, Reiss, during the instillation of two new underground electricity cables. This was due to the proximity of both proposed developments to Green Hill Broch a Scheduled Monument. The watching brief was conducted in two parts, on the 30th of August 2023 and 22nd April 2024. Greenhill Broch was also visited to establish a record of its condition.
Overall, there were no features present in either of the two trenches that were of archaeological interest. The only recorded features were two modern clay drains, a stone drain and a deposit with some concrete slabs at the gate between the two fields. This was likely to have been material dumped in the gateway to reduce poaching. Overall this would suggest that the watched sections, despite being near to Greenhill Broch, were simply part of a modern rural landscape with no sign of prehistoric activity. As no archaeological features were uncovered, there were no further recommendations. <1>
