EHG6285 - Watching brief - shore works, underground cabling, Eigg-Traigh
Technique(s)
Organisation

Date
July 2022
Description
A watching brief was undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) in 2022 during the ground excavations for the shore end works for the R100 Telecommunication Cable Project. The shore end works included a number of sites in Shetland, Orkney and the Inner Hebrides. The ground disturbing works monitored included the marine cable laying at landfall locations within the inter-tidal zones and beach deposits, up to the location of Beach Man Holes (BMH). Works to install the BMH’s had been undertaken before the shore end works for the cable laying and were not monitored as part of this scheme of works. The watching brief was recommended following a Historic Environment Baseline and Impact Appraisal (see EHG6283 & EHG6284) to identify the areas of high archaeological potential. Two areas in the Highland area were monitored, these were Bay of Laig, Eigg (watching brief carried out 27-28/07/2022) , and Traigh, near Arisaig (watching brief carried out 30/07/2022). No features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed during the excavations for the cable <1>
